I've
always been really interested in photography, and have lots of books on different
photographers, but only recently started doing it myself. I really
enjoy taking the camera out and cycling around looking for stuff to photograph;
although it can be tricky to find the time to do this. I did a course this
year in Black and White Photography where I learned to print my own pictures,
this was really interesting and satisfying to do, and it made me very aware
of the possibilities of photography.
At the moment I use a basic semi-manual camera; its a Centron K400 which is about as cheap and cheerful as you can get. I get the pictures processed in Gunns on Wexford St - the friendliest shop in the world - and plan to do a whole lot more printing when I have more time and spare cash.
My
next plan is to get hold of a Lomo
camera -
I love the super-saturated colour that they produce, although I've also
heard that they can be quite unreliable
and frustrating to use. My friend Bren has
a wonderful Lomo
home, although
he did recently curse the existence of the Lomo camera after an entire
roll of him dancing in a tiger suit on stage with the Flaming Lips failed
to come
out. But I'm sure they've made their peace by now.
My favourite photographers are: Diane Arbus, David LaChapelle, Martin Parr, Mary Ellen Mark, W Eugene Smith, Richard Avedon, and many others that I can't think of right now.
